Découverte :

Découvert en 1956. Le premier brevet déposé pour l'Iso E Super® date de 1973, par les scientifiques John B. Hall et James M. Sanders.

Voies de synthèse :

L'Iso E Super® est synthétisé par une réaction de Diels-Alder entre le Myrcène et la 3-methyl-3-penten-2-one, en présence de chlorure d'aluminium. La cyclisation du produit intermédiaire obtenu est faite grace à l'action de l'acide phosphorique. Cette cyclisation donne naissance à deux composés isomères : l'Iso E Super® et l'Arborone, en proportions 95/5.

Précurseurs de synthèse :

L'Iso E Super® n'est pas précurseur de la synthèse d'un autre composé d'intérêt olfactif.

Isoméries :

Plus de 20 molécules isomères composent l'Iso E Super®. La molécule appelée Isocyclemone à l'état pur ne sent presque rien, mais l'Iso E Super® dit ''Plus'', ou Arborone, présent entre 2 et 5% dans l'Iso E Super® commercial, a une très forte odeur (10 000 fois plus puissant que l'Iso E Super), et est responsable de l'odeur de l'Iso E Super®. L'Iso E Super® Plus seul n'est pas commercialisé, car son procédé d'obtention est trop couteux.

L'Iso E Super® est utilisé dans des notes masculines, boisées et ambrées comme base boisée. Permet d'apporter une légère note florale-violette aux notes boisées.

Commentaires et anecdotes :

Le nom de l'Iso E Super® vient de la contraction de l'ISOcyclomyrcetone Ethanone, et de la qualité SUPERieure accessible depuis l'amélioration du procédé de fabrication. Souvent appelé ''bois-violette''. A partir de 1993, chaque société fut libre de produire son propre Iso E Super®. La production actuelle de la molécule est de 1800 tonnes par an.
